Who We Elect Matters

Blogged in Volunteer,Voting by joe Wednesday September 1, 2010

You’ve heard us say this phrase a million times, but there may be no better story that explains why it’s true than this one:

This past legislative session, Wisconsin had an opportunity to pass the Clean Energy Jobs Act, a bill that would have created 15,000 new clean energy jobs here in Wisconsin, reduced our dependence on foreign oil and very importantly – reduced our contributions to global warming.

When the bill died on Earth Day, we heard from conservation voters statewide who weren’t just disappointed. They were angry.

They were asking WHY? Why did a bill that would address the most critical issue facing our state and nation die in the Wisconsin legislature?

The answer has a lot to do with Senator Jeff Plale. Senator Plale (a democrat from Milwaukee) was an original author of the bill. However, as the months of the legislature went by, Senator Plale worked with utilities to water down key provisions of the bill. Ultimately, Senator Plale prevented the bill from moving out of the Committee, which he co-chairs. Many have blamed his cozy relationship with opponents of the bill for its demise.

Perhaps you remember your own bitter disappointment when you heard the news that Wisconsin refused to take steps on global warming?

Right now, it’s time to turn that disappointment into action.

On September 14th (just 19 days from now), the voters of Milwaukee have a unique opportunity to replace Senator Plale with a true conservation champion. Chris Larson is running for state Senate because he believes Wisconsin can do better. Chris Larson is committed to creating a true clean energy future for Wisconsin. And, he has the leadership skills to do it. Already as a County Supervisor, he has become a recognized leader on issues like public transit, park protection, and clean energy. Learn more about Chris Larson here.

Chris Larson wouldn’t just be a better Senator than Plale. Chris Larson would be a conservation rockstar in the state Senate. Wisconsin needs Chris Larson to win on September 14th.

Winning a democratic primary against a long-time incumbent (especially one who is well funded by anti-conservation special interests) is not going to be easy.

BUT-We can win.

We are pulling out all the stops. There is a lot on the line on September 14th, so we are going to PUSH until the last possible minute.

That said, we need your help.

We need to contact voters. We need to tell them why Chris Larson is great. We need to tell them why they should make the effort to vote in a primary election. Voters need to hear directly from fellow conservationists that this race matters.

Can you commit a few hours of your time between now and September 14th to elect a great conservation Senator? Everyone can help make the difference.

  • Even if you are hundreds of miles from Milwaukee, you can still make calls to voters. In fact, you can make calls right from your lazyboy! Just let us know if you are willing and we will get you set up. It’s easy…and rewarding! Call Matt at 608-661-0845 (or reply to this email) for more info.
  • Join us for a door-to-door canvass in Milwaukee. The first one is coming up this weekend, with more to come. Find more info here.
  • Join us at our offices in Madison, Milwaukee or Eau Claire to call voters. We have a lot of fun and eat a lot of pizza. Find more info here.
  • Help assemble and distribute yard signs from our Milwaukee office. Call 414-224-1696 to plug in.
  • Donate! Talking to voters takes funding.  We appreciate any special contribution you can make to this campaign. Contribute here.

We have just 19 days to make the point that we will not just watch global warming legislation die without taking action. Please help us elect Chris Larson!
